How Much Is Too Much?, Tuesday, April 27, 2010

Reading: James 1:11, For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich man will fade away even while he goes about his business.

Are you rich? Yes, in spiritual terms you might be. But, are you rich in the world’s terms. Do9 you plan to be wealthy in 5, 10 or 20 years from now? Would you like to be rich? If we’re totally honest, most of us wouldn’t mind trying it out for a while!

There is a cost to being wealthy. Wealth is often a reason to exercise power or control over others. Some who are wealthy tend to rely on their money for security and happiness instead of relying on God. Money is not a sin… but, wealth can lead to sin. Paul wrote, “The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs”, I Timothy 6:10.

What does James mean when he says, “Bu the one who is rich should not take pride in his low position”, James 1:10? He is trying to say to the wealthy this concept: let people know that your riches are not the most important thing in the world to you. Let others know that your peace and security come from your relationship with Jesus rather than your wealth. All of us regardless of how much we have are called to be good stewards of what God has given us.
