Servanthood, Wednesday, October 13, 2010

Reading: John 13:5, 12-17, 5After that, [Jesus] poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. 12When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. "Do you understand what I have done for you?" he asked them. 13"You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. 15I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

Can you imagine, the same one that spoke the universe in all it’s majesty into existence, knelt down and washed the smelly, dirty feet of these men, his disciples? These men were not some delicately cared for princes or nobleman. They were fishermen, tax collector and travelers. As if it were not humbling enough to leave heaven’s splendor and come to earth, but he was constantly performing acts of humility, spending time, reaching out, associating with the lowly.

As Jesus said, “Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet,” do something for someone today that is lowly and humbling. Before you quickly, just do something just to do it, remember the great span that Jesus crossed… Heaven’s glory to washing feet.

What can you do today to “reach down” and perform an act of humility for someone?

Now let’s do it!
