Reading: Matthew 6:19-21, 19"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
In a time when millions of people are jobless, millions of homes are in foreclosure and the economy continues to teeter, everyone seems to be concerned about their finances and their bank account. Anyone vested in the stock market are constantly checking to see whether their investments are stabilizing or plummeting again. Retirees are wondering how they’re going to make it financially with their pension funds depleted. The “moth and rust” that’s destroying our “treasures” are financial institutions, the economy and poor economic and ethical choices by others. I wonder, though, as I see deep concern on many faces and hear the disappointed tones, how many of us feel this same fear, concern and despair about our heavenly bank account? Yes, it is true… nothing can touch that account, so we need not worry about it’s depletion or elimination; but, how concerned are you about the status of that account? Can you imagine, getting an account statement in a golden envelope that comes at the same time your other account statements arrive? You quickly open your bank account and your investment account statements to see if you lost any money or if you still have funds. You are relieved to see that you are still doing okay. The Heaven Account Statement in the golden envelop gets tossed on the table when you walk in the house. Finally, you get around to opening it to find it’s in the single digits, yet, this particular account is for all eternity. Why do we often spend more time considering and preparing for the brief window of time in our lives called “retirement” but do so little to consider and prepare for an account that will last for eternity?
Challenge: Today, build into your eternal account.
What can you do today to add to your eternal account and store up your treasures in heaven?
REVIEW
What were you able to do today to store up your treasures and add to your heavenly account?
