Becoming a Mentor, Thursday February 3, 2011

Reading: Proverbs 4:6, Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you.
I read one time, “A mentor without wisdom is just a know-it-all. And, nobody wants to follow a know-it-all. God’s desire is for a man to be a strong role model. Let me encourage you in a few areas of mentoring.

A mentor is a student of the Book
II Timothy 3:16 – “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,”
No advice can trump the Word of God, be sure to check there first.

A mentor passes on the secrets. A lot of batons are dropped in relay races. Just make sure that your hand-off has been solid and timely. Running the next leg is up to the one holding the baton.

We don’t choose to be role models, we are chosen. Many years ago Charles Barkley looked into the camera and said, “I’m not a role model”. David Robinson responded by saying, “I disagree with Charles. You can deny being a role model all you want. But, I don’t think it’s your decision to make. We don’t choose to be a role model, we’re chosen. Our only choice is whether to be a good model or a bad one.”

How can you become or be a better student of the Book?
