God’s Best Friend, Saturday, February 19, 2011

Reading: Luke 9:57-62, 57As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go." 58Jesus replied, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head." 59He said to another man, "Follow me." But the man replied, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father." 60Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God." 61 Still another said, "I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say good-bye to my family." 62Jesus replied, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God."

Most dog owners can easily tell you why they bear the title, “Man’s Best Friend.” They are loyal, constantly trying to please, protective, comforting, faithful and never questions you. It’s amazing how happy dogs can be and how they get so thoroughly excited about spending time with you. And, oh, my… they sure do work hard for your attention.

When it comes to following God, can you imagine if we were able to bear the title, “God’s Best Friend”? If you were to tell a dog, “Come here… follow me”, he wouldn’t say, “Well, I’d love to and all, but I have to go say good-bye to my ma and pa, first.” No, they’d spring into action, almost as if to say, “Oh, me? Really? You want to spend time with me? Yes, of course! Okay, you’re going to lead me on a leash? Oh, that’s great… that just means that you want to stay close to you, which is exactly where I want to be… oh, sorry… I didn’t mean to step on your foot while we were walking… I was too busy looking up at you to see if I was doing everything right and if I was getting your attention. When we get back, can I just sit in your lap, because I love being as close to you as I can be?” Can you imagine living like you are “God’s Best Friend”?

What will you do today to act as if you are “God’s Best Friend” and follow Him and constantly be looking to Him for His approval throughout the day?
