He Understands

Reading: Hebrews 4:14-16, 14Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. 15For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin. 16Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

I will not soon forget attending a Memorial Day Service where Vietnam Vets were honored. To see these men and to know that I will never understand what they have been through. Even the looks on their faces as they greet each other were filled with a “knowing” glance. They had a sense of camaraderie because they endured a horrific war and political upheaval. Even friends, family and loved ones who have not endured those experiences will never understand exactly where they’ve been or what they’ve experienced. As Christians we endure guilt from sin and temptation or scars from acts of sin against us, we feel more apt to share those weaknesses or scars with those who have been there? What a great God we have! We get to approach His throne with confidence and Jesus gives us a “knowing” glance because He’s been there… He knows what it’s like. “[He] has been tempted in every way, just as we are.”
