True Love, Tuesday, June 22, 2010

Reading: Colossians 1:16-17, 16For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. 17He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

Let’s say you were asked the question, “Do you believe in God?” And you reply, “Yes, I do.” “Then tell me about your God. Give me some specifics. What is He like? What are His characteristics?

What specifics about God’s character would you describe? Today’s passage focuses on one primary characteristic. God is self-sufficient. He doesn’t need anything or anyone. We need food, water and air. But for God, nothing is necessary. All of life is in God. Life is a gift from God. God isn’t interested in you because He is incomplete without you. He’s interested in you because He loves you, not because He needs you.

It’s amazing. God is completely independent of everyone else. I cannot make Him anymore God than He already is. If every human on earth became blind today, the stars would still sine. They exist in their own right and don’t depend on us. As similarly, if Christians didn’t exist, God would be no less than He is. Maybe you’ve thought that God needs our support or that He needs us to defend Him before others. He doesn’t need you, but He chooses to work through you and to call you to Himself.

So why did He even create us? He must have done it for some reason. Maybe, just maybe… that’s what love is all about.

What does God mean to you?

How can you live in and demonstrate those characteristics today?
