Tear Down the Altars, Tuesday, November 23, 2010

Reading: Judges 2:1-3, 1 Then the Angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said: “I led you up from Egypt and brought you to the land of which I swore to your fathers; and I said, ‘I will never break My covenant with you. 2 And you shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; you shall tear down their altars.’ But you have not obeyed My voice. Why have you done this? 3 Therefore I also said, ‘I will not drive them out before you; but they shall be thorns in your side, and their gods shall be a snare to you.’”

So many times we think the way to conquer the sin in our lives is to simply stop doing it and to ask forgiveness. God told the children of Israel to utterly destroy the people within the land that God gave them and to destroy their altars that were made for other gods. God knew that these remaining remnants would be temptations and deterrents from their relationship with Him. Sure enough, Israel did not do what God had told them to do, destroy it ALL. Tear down the altars! Can you imagine firefighters called to a scene, putting out the fire but not making sure the cause of the fire is eliminated? Often we address our sin in the same way, we put out the fire for the time being, but, the ultimate cause of the sin, we ignore and act like it will be okay. Men, we need to not simply stop performing our acts of sin and ask forgiveness, we need to hate it enough to utterly destroy all remnants of the sin. Tear down the altars! Don’t let there be anything that could tempt you or cause you to stumble. Whatever you leave behind, God will allow to be a thorn in your side.

What remnants of sin and temptation have you left in place that can cause you to stumble and fall back into?
